The real danger of self-investment ๐
Hello from California!
Iโm here for a whole weekend intensive with my coach.
Iโve been working with her for six amazing months,
which included these two full days, all about me,
helping me supercharge my ability to serve my clients.
Does that sound fabulous?
It is.
When I signed up for it, though,
it was scary as fuck.
This level and caliber of coaching support was no small investment.
Also,
I made this investment at a time when I was re-building, well, everything.
When my living expenses were, frankly, staggering.
But heart and guts were so clear:
I needed SUPPORT.
Happily,
I had the magic and spells to spark my courage and get my mind on board,
and so I summoned funds from everywhere.
I asked my credit card company for a new card with as much spending power and as extended a 0% APR as possible.
I asked my mom for a loan. (THANKS MOM)
I raised my own prices.
And invested all that capital in ME.
I will be honest:
Seeing all that summoned money leave my account felt dangerous.
Which makes sense, since white capitalist patriarchy highly discourages women from investing in support for themselves.
White capitalist patriarchy prefers we invest in that which perpetuates the dominance of its institutions. You know, like:
The housing market
The stock market
Insurance of all kinds
Higher education
Listen: none of these investments are necessarily bad,
but the reason they SEEM โgoodโ and โsmartโ
the reason it seems better to buy a house than to invest in YOU
is that
1. White capitalist patriarchy prefers that its institutions hold all the money.
2. It prefers women to be subservient, supportive, and self-denying.
This is for good reason, on their part.
Empowered, supported, self-affirming women are dangerous.
We challenge the status quo.
We demand respect and recognition and compensation.
We show one another a different way to be,
and in so doing, we threaten the way The Man likes it.
So.
Here I am, in California, supporting myself in expanding my power
to help women trust themselves to do what they want.
Was it dangerous, to invest so much in me?
Depends who youโre asking.
love,
Natalie
