Into the unknoooooowwwwnnnn

Happy Sunday friend,

This week, I was mentoring a group of coaches

and one asked me:

What do we do when our clients have a Fear of the Unknown?

I took a deep breath, and began eloquently:

Just kidding.

I just thought out loud for maybe 3 minutes.

Here are the basics of what I said:

One, Fear of the Unknown makes complete and total sense.

Planet Earth is not the easiest place to live.

It is completely reasonable, when we're contemplating a change,

to think through What Could Go Wrong.

And/but

in that case

it's not really Fear of the Unknown, is it?

Because really, we're living with The Unknown all the time.

So Two:

It's not Fear of the Unknown.

It's Fear of the Worst-Case Scenario.

The Unknown, it turns out, can be delightful.

Journey Into the Unknown, and you'll find:

Some cute guy on a dating app

that turns out to be your perfect match.

A friend for life

you meet at a faraway college,

or risk-of-a-job.

A lovely new home

in a lovely little community

because you saw an exit off the highway and decided to take it.

Each and every of the above

happened to me

when I journeyed Into the Unknown.

Think and smile to see

these Best Case Scenarios

have totally happened to you, too.

So, when facing the Fear of the Unknown

  1. Honor the fear.

  2. Recognize it's actually Fear of the Worst-Case Scenario.

  3. Consider that The Unknown is full of delights and serendipities, too.

  4. Ask: What's the BEST-Case Scenario?

  5. Use the mantra I teach in A Spell for Trusting Your Next Move

  6. Proceed with curiosity and creativity.

Captain Picard is right:

Fear is an incompetent teacher.

Drop his class.

love,

Natalie
