Seize the avocado.
I've eaten two perfect avocados this week,
and they have me thinking about the power of living in the present.
Like, not living for the future / The Plan / “someday” -
but instead living for Right Now.
So.
Usually, when I shop for avocados, I choose underripe ones.
Because, you know: planning for future avocado consumption.
Maybe 1 out of 3 times, it works. I catch the avocado at a good time, and enjoy it.
But 1 out of 3 times, I want to eat the avocado and am annoyed it isn't ripe yet.
And 1 out of 3 times, I miss the ripeness window altogether and end up trashing a now-yucky avocado, which is the worst.
But this was me at the grocery store this week:
I found an avocado I knew was perfect. And I bought it.
I ate it that same night for dinner –
(Steamed broccoli + avocado chunks + olive oil + lemon juice + salt)
– and yes, it was perfect.
And of course I tried to extract some life wisdom from the whole thing.
This is what can happen, I thought, when I choose Today over Someday.
This is what can happen when I go with what feels good Now.
This is what can happen when I remember The Present is more vital than The Plan.
And so my friend, I'm wondering for me and for you:
where are we deferring enjoyment?
Where are we choosing Someday over Today?
Where are we making The Plan more important than The Present?
And maybe most importantly:
what perfectly ripe opportunity is presenting itself,
inviting us to dig in, Right Now?
xo,
Natalie
PS: For my US friends, here's something happening Right Now: ICE is abusing Haitian asylum seekers, who desperately need our support. This resourceful article from The Cut lists a bunch of places to donate, as well as links to what to say when you call your senators and representatives.
